EMPIRE
The military infrastructure within the general study area comprises buildings: Collins Barracks, the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, and the Military Infirmary; fortifications: The Magazine Fort (and the Star Fort); Monuments: The memorial garden and the Wellington Monument; and transport infrastructure: the two circular roads, constructed for military purposes which converge on, or emanate from, the study area. This dense military landscape exists as an extraordinary entity and is to be examined through the lens of historic documents and paintings, through available inventories from the National Inventory of Architectural heritage, through historic maps, through archival material and through the recent and current planning documentation which accompanies all planning applications for works to protected structures at Planning Authority level and An Bórd Pleanála.
